Let me share what Bikur Cholim of Baltimore truly means…
Many people know Bikur Cholim for our hospital pantries—warm, welcoming spaces stocked with fresh kosher food—and for our incredible volunteers who deliver thousands of meals to families both in and out of the hospital. In times of medical crisis, we are there to ensure no family has to worry about their most basic needs.
But what makes Bikur Cholim so extraordinary goes far beyond that.
We visit patients and their families at the bedside—not just to check in, but to truly be present, to listen, and to support. This is the essence of Bikur Cholim in its purest form.
What’s less widely known is that we also manage and fund apartments for families traveling from out of town for medical care—giving them a place to stay for weeks or even months during some of the most difficult times in their lives.
Each year, Bikur Cholim loans hundreds of pieces of medical equipment to those in need—wheelchairs, crutches, and assistive devices—especially around the holidays when extended family visits. We provide essential items like oxygen concentrators for the home, and now even biliblankets when prescribed. If you need something medical-related, Bikur Cholim is often the place to turn.
We also arrange transportation for non-emergency medical appointments, ensuring patients can get the care they need without added stress.
Perhaps most impactful of all, Bikur Cholim works around the clock behind the scenes in patient advocacy and medical navigation. Through deep relationships with doctors and medical institutions across the Baltimore/DC area, we help families access earlier appointments, connect with hard-to-reach specialists, and receive the care they deserve. This advocacy not only improves outcomes—it transforms how patients and families experience the healthcare system.
A single phone call can connect someone to the right doctor, the right plan, and the right support. We are there at the bedside helping families navigate complex medical decisions, weigh options, consider transfers, and even approach the most sensitive end-of-life questions—with care, clarity, and compassion.
We are always looking for more volunteers to join this incredible mission. And none of this—none of it—would be possible without the generosity of supporters like you.
