Let me share a little about Bikur Cholim.
People likely know that Bikur Cholim has multiple pantries in various hospitals, stocked with fresh food... and we have hundreds of volunteers delivering thousands of meals both in and out of the hospital. We are set up to help families going through a medical crisis with any food needs.
Bikur Cholim visits patients and their families to check on them in the hospital and see if they need anything - a true fulfillment of Bikur Cholim.
What is less well known is that Bikur Cholim also pays for and manages many apartments for those who come from out of town for medical care, sometimes for weeks or months at a time.
Bikur Cholim loans hundreds of pieces of medical equipment a year to those in need, especially around the holidays for elderly family members who come to visit. Bikur Cholim is the source for an oxygen concentrator when needed at home. If you need something medical-related, please let them know.
Bikur Cholim provides rides to those who need transportation to non-emergent medical appointments or office visits.
Most importantly, perhaps, in the last few years, BC has networked and made relationships with many doctors and medical institutions across the Balt/DC area for referrals, earlier appointments, emergency room needs, access to hard-to-reach specialists, and real advocacy for patients and their families. This has significantly improved the understanding of medical care provided and has made staff more understanding of the needs and considerations of patients or family members in a hospital.
Bikur Cholim is a phone call away to assist in finding the right doctor for an injury or an illness... and is bedside to help with questions of how best to weigh medical options, when to transfer or stay put, to discuss the importance communication with Rabbis and the medical providers about challenging end-of-life issues... those are just a few examples.
We are always looking for more volunteers... so if you are interested, please reach out directly to BC... and of course, none of this can happen without the incredible financial support from the community.
One should never need it... but really the best thing one can do for yourself or a loved one… after Hatzalah / an ambulance has been called... call Bikur Cholim... and they'll be there for your every need. Each and every one of us can make a real difference in the life of a family member or friend.
